Gros Morne - Western Brook Pond and Tablelands

Good day everyone! Jon and I had a hard time sleeping because we were trying to sleep at 10:30 pm but we weren’t tired. Also, we had to add 30 minutes to Nova Scotia time so we were sleeping at 10 pm NS time which is early for us. Also, the people in the cabin beside ours were snoring really loudly. It was quite disturbing. I stayed awake till 12am. Then I woke up at 5 am and I heard another noise. It was quieter but faster paced. I think the person had shallow breathing during that time. Anyways, we woke up at 7:30am because we signed up for a 10am boat tour to see U shaped valleys carved out by glacier. We had to wake up early because it would take us 45 minutes to drive up there. Then we would have to hike 3 km before reaching the dock at Western Brook Pond.

We managed to snag seats on the upper deck. We had a magnificent view of the valleys. There were waterfalls and rocks that looked like faces. The tour guide pointed them out but I couldn’t see the ones he described. I did see other ones but they were different. He had to show me pictures. It was a little sad because even after he showed it to me, I still couldn’t see it. There were also “hanging valleys” which are valleys that used to be connected but the larger valley that our boat was on came in and separated it.

The water in the valley is made of freshwater with low ion concentration. The tour guide told us a story where their water pump kept on overflowing. The reason was that the water pump uses the conductivity of water to determine how much water it had. Since the water in the valley had low ion concentration, it wasn’t very conduction so the water pump couldn’t sense that
water was present.

On the boat tour we met John and Karen. John was originally from Newfoundland and Karen was from Nova Scotia. They were very nice. John told us about Newfoundland culture. He told us about being “screeched in”. This is a ritual where you drink Newfoundland Rum and kiss a codfish in order to be an honorary Newfie. Jon and I hope to be as one with the people here before we leave.

We then drove to Tableland which is described as looking like Mars. Yesterday, I thought this place was called Tabletop. Ha ha. We weren’t sure where we were going. We wanted to drive a little further than the sign because on the map, it looked like you can drive right near the Tableland and not just in the parking lot. We were wrong but we drove back and forth 3 times. When we did this, there was a biker with a yellow shirt who we passed on all 3 trips. The biker must think we’re crazy. The funny thing is that when we were leaving the Tableland site, we drove pass him. Ha ha!

Tableland does look like Mars. The rocks here are orangey coloured. We walked right into the U-shaped valley. It was gorgeous. The hike wasn’t that bad either. It was a 4km hike there and back. In total, we hiked 10 kms today. Pretty good for two scrawny Asian people.

We took a nap before we hiked Tableland. When we woke up, we saw a card on Jon’s window. It was an ad for a nearby restaurant. Someone put it on our window when we were sleeping. It must not have been a pretty sight. I was sleeping in a weird position. My feet were on the side of the door. I woke up to a painful, burning feeling on my big toe. The sun had moved onto my toes. AIYAH!

We drove into Grand Falls – Windsor and went to Walmart to get water and some canned food. We then went to Mcdonalds and ordered a 10 piece of chicken mcnuggets meal, a bacon cheeseburger and a mcdouble. The Mcdonalds there was getting flustered beyond belief. Everyone was bumping into each other. There was only one cashier even though there was a line. The worse part is that they had at least 7 people working: 2 in the back cooking, and 5 in the front. If you’ve ever been to the Kerrisdale Mcdonalds during noon, it’s complete mayhem. The lines are so long that people are glued to the walls. However, they still manage in a somewhat orderly fashion.

We are staying at Clarenville which is about 250km from St. Johns.

Have a good night everybody!
